As a destination for a holiday, Hong Kong is fabulous and ticks all the right boxes when it comes to unique sights and activities, shopping, wining and dining. An enchanting mix of Chinese and British colonial heritage and sites ensures Hong Kong tourists are treated to a holiday with a difference. Hong Kong is also one of the rare city destinations where tourists can sunbathe and go swimming at beautifully kept beaches too.

Victoria Harbour is Hong Kong’s most prominent feature. This narrow strait of water separates the Kowloon Peninsula from Hong Kong Island. The shorelines of both sides of the harbour are festooned with the territory’s famous skyscrapers with the Bank of China Tower and the Cheung Kong Centre among the most recognisable.

An essential activity for tourists in Hong Kong is to ride a Star Ferry across the harbour. Ferries from Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon run across to piers in Central and Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island. A harbour tour cruise allows for more in-depth insights. A harbour evening tour in Hong Kong provides a different perspective with colourful lights and neon signs offering an almost surreal backdrop.

A helicopter tour provides commanding vistas over the harbour and the island and is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that gives a different aspect. The views from the island’s Victoria Peak are panoramic. The Peak Tram offers the ultimate Hong Kong experience on its journey from Garden Road to the peak. Another quintessential Hong Kong travel experience is a trip aboard a tram along the north shore of the island.

Shopping is an area that Hong Kong excels in and even for those without much interest in the activity there is something to suit. High-end shopping centres like the IFC Mall and Pacific Place are pleasing spots to buy the latest in designer brands. A stroll along the Tsim Sha Tsui end of Nathan Road is a must, while markets including Temple Street Night Market and Stanley offer a taste of the Hong Kong of yesteryear.

Dining is heaven in Hong Kong too and food tours are a delight for foodies. No trip to the Chinese Special Administrative Region is complete without sampling dim-sum dumplings and wonton noodle soup, available everywhere, as well as delicious Cantonese specialities. Eating options are not just limited to Chinese as gourmet delights from around the world are on the menus of the massive portfolio of restaurants in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is also interesting for those who love culture as it boasts an eclectic annual calendar of festivals plus museums themed on every imaginable topic. While the Chinese Lunar New Year Festival is considered the flagship of the annual events, others such as the Spring Lantern Festival, the Hungry Ghost Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival come a very close second.

Hong Kong’s museum collection includes ones that focus on art, history, science, travel to outer space and Sun Yat-sen. The Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin has a wonderful range of permanent exhibits in enticingly named galleries among which are the Cantonese Opera Hall, the Children's Discovery Gallery and the New Territories Hall.
