Spotless streets, a multicultural population, and a prosperous economy are a few of the reasons why Singapore is sometimes known as 'the Switzerland of Southeast Asia.' Another frequently used nickname for Singapore, 'the Garden City,' may not be quite so obvious to visitors to this skyscraper-laden city-state whose population density ranks second only to Monaco's.

However, walking tours of Singapore take visitors past more than 50 large parks and four spacious nature reserves. As a matter of fact, greenery covers more than half of Singapore's total land mass. Singapore's historic heart, on the other hand, remains the Riverside central business district. This spot on the Singapore River's north bank is where Sir Stamford Raffles originally landed and established this former British trading colony in 1819.

Most of Singapore's hottest nightclubs are situated on the riverside streets between the government buildings on the Singapore River's north bank and the financial centres inside the south bank's skyscrapers. The Singapore River's mouth is the best place to begin a walking tour or a more modern e-scooter tour around Singapore City.

High rise buildings and shopping complexes may have replaced several of Singapore's traditional street markets and shophouses, but the iconic Merlion statue spouts water on the Singapore River's south bank in the middle of its namesake park. A much smaller Merlion cub statue stands just 28m away from Cavenagh Bridge. A sign which prohibits cattle from crossing remains at the entrance of this pedestrian walkway first constructed in 1869.

The original Stamford Raffles statue now greets visitors to the Victoria Theatre, but the replica statue next to the Asian Civilisations Museum may be better known to most tourists due to its scenic location surrounded by Boat Quay shophouses and skyscrapers. The famous Orchard Road shopping district is the easiest place to arrange a personal shopping service in Singapore.

Singapore's multiculturalism is prominently on display in Little India, Chinatown, and two neighbouring old Malay districts called Kampong Glam and Bugis. Another predominantly Malay area is Geylang Serai, an East Coast neighbourhood situated near Singapore Changi Airport and some surprisingly secluded beaches. A Places of Worship tour in Singapore may take visitors past many of the Burmese temples in Toa Payoh, Balestier, Newton, and Novena.

Jurong is home of the Singapore Discovery Centre, Singapore Bird Park, and Singapore Science Centre. Nature lovers may also want to venture north to Singapore Zoo. Singapore's first casino and several family friendly theme parks are the main reasons why Sentosa Island is the preferred weekend getaway for many Singaporeans.

The newer Marina Bay Sands integrated resort and casino, however, is giving Resorts World Sentosa a run for its money because of its close proximity to Riverside and various state of the art modern attractions such as the ArtScience Museum and the Gardens by the Bay. The London Eye was the main inspiration for the Singapore Flyer, which towers 150m above Singapore's impressive skyline.
